Saturday 10th August saw the ladies heading East to Huntly to compete in their annual tournament for men and women competing for the Strathbogie Cups.
All teams attending received a warm welcome as always from Huntly RFC and the day proved to be very enjoyable outing for players and spectators alike, not least because we could all have done with suncream rather than waterproofs as the forecast rain did not materialise.
Before the competition began all payers gathered on the pitch for a two minute silence in respect of the recent tragic passing of Grangemouth Stagettes player Eilidh McNab and the mother of a local Huntly player.
The very warm, humid conditions made for a very tiring day although conditions underfoot were perfect.
There was a mix of developing and more experienced teams taking part in the ladies competition with Huntly, Peterhead, Aberdeenshire Quines and Strathmore represented. Every game was played with enthusiasm, determination and good spirit by all teams.
Everything came right for the ICD ladies on the day with good defensive lines, great steals and a strong scrum. That coupled with sublime support play, great hands and communication meant that they won every match with a good number of tries and conversions.
Great to see Erin Green back on the pitch after a nasty injury at the end of last season and a hattrick of tries for Ruth Watts in the final match. All players on the pitch led by example and what was obvious from the sidelines was that although the players are great individuals, they played this tournament as a strong team with everyone playing their part. Needless to say the ladies were thrilled with lifting the trophy Special mention also to our Captain, Catriona Knott who despite having played four games already, stepped in to assist the Aberdeenshire Quines in their final match, scoring for them into the bargain !.
